Academic year and summer opportunities for theatre researchers are available to UChicago graduate students. Interested students should apply via GRAD Gargoyle.

Who are we looking for?
STAGE welcomes graduate students with hybrid interests and skills to work on our theatrical productions: scientists and engineers who have experience and/or interest in theatre; artists, performers, designers and dramaturgs who have experience and/or interest in science and technology.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are inspired by STAGE's work process of devising stories through collective research and collaborative play. STAGE requires that graduate student researchers commit to a minimum of two quarters of work with the Lab.

Graduate student theatre researchers are part of an interdisciplinary team that includes students, faculty, staff, and art and technology professionals and primarily report to the Director of STAGE, Professor Nancy Kawalek.

Current theatre project openings include:
Entanglement
The River Project

Primary responsibilities include:
-Research a breading of essential source material for STAGE Lab theatre projects;
-Learn STAGE's work process that is inspired by the exploratory process of experimental science;
-Contribute to brainstorms, improvisations and prototypes utilizing your own skills and experience, as well as skills you would like to develop;
-Present weekly at theatre team meetings and quarterly at Lab Group Meetings and include supporting documentation/notes on findings;
-Attend theatre team meetings and weekly Lab Group Meetings in addition to independent research;
-Other activities where student's skillset/interests and STAGE projects intersect.

Required skills:
-Imagination, enthusiasm and flexibility for approaching research as a means to investigate scientific topics and artistic metaphors from every angle.
-Aptitude for improvisation - either already versed in or eager and willing to develop.
-Interest in applying and/or tackling new skills (software, hardware, digital and analog technologies, etc.) and research modes (one-on-one interviews, surveying, data collection/visualization, prototyping, experiential, etc. in addition to text/archival).
-Comfortable working independently and collaboratively.
-Strong work ethic.
-Punctuality and regularity in meeting attendance.
-Willingness to participate as an actor in scene and character improvisations.
-Fluent in written and oral English.

How to apply:
Interested UChicago graduate students should apply via GRAD Gargoyle.

Positions are unpaid for an initial volunteer period. Based on funding availability for the project, paid positions may be available in subsequent months.

In your application, please submit your CV, including GPA, along with a cover letter and short statement describing either:

-What your previous theatre experience entailed, and why you're interested in working with STAGE and in a new way?

OR, if you don't have previous theatre experience:

-Why are you interested in working with STAGE?

In your statement, please include hours per week that you would be able to commit to working with STAGE. Due to the exploratory nature of the work, we require graduate students to commit to a minimum of two quarters of work with the Lab.

Application timeline:
Applications are reviewed as they are submitted and first interviews are held on a rolling basis. As a general rule, apply as early as possible in advance of the quarters you are interested in researching with STAGE:
-For Spring Quarter: apply mid-January through mid-February
-For Summer Quarter: apply mid-January through mid-May
-For Fall Quarter: apply mid-April through mid-September
-For Winter Quarter: apply mid-October through mid-December
