Curiosity: The Making of a Scientist is a docuseries with a focus on storytelling, science communication and filmmaking. Each episode takes us into the lab and life of a scientist. The series explores what motivates and is involved in choosing a career in science, what inspires scientific investigation, and the nature of curiosity itself.

STAGE is seeking both graduate student scientists and artists who want to expand beyond the traditional boundaries of filmmaking and engage in interdisciplinary collaborations. This is a team-driven projet that requires a willingness to explore a non-traditional method of filmmaking. Specifically, STAGE uses the scientific process as a model for our filmmaking process; that is, we are invested in the exploratory process as much as we are in the outcome. Experienced UChicago students already working on the project will guide newer students through the process.

Graduate student film researchers are part of an interdisciplinary team that includes students, faculty, staff and art and technology professionals. Film researchers are supervised by the STAGE Lab Director of Science, Dr. Sunanda Prabhu-Gaunkar.

Core skill sets desired:
-Cintematography (tripod and/or handheld), lighting, sound
-Strong visual sensibilities (ability to identify visually compelling footage)
-Editing (principles of editing on Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro or equivalent software; STAGE works with Adobe Premiere)
-Post-production (color correction, color grading, sound correction on Pro Tools or equivalent software)

How to apply:
Interested students should apply via GRAD Gargyole.

Positions are unpaid for an initial volunteer period. Based on funding availability for the project, paid positions may be available in subsequent months.

In your application, please submit your CV, including GPA, along with a cover letter and short statement describing either:

-What your previous film experience entailed, and why you're interested in working with STAGE and in a new way?

OR, if you don't have previous film experience,

-Why are you interested in working with STAGE?

In your statement, please include hours per week that you would be able to commit to working with STAGE. Due to the exploratory nature of the work, we require graduate students to commit to a minimum of two quarters of work with the Lab.

Application timeline:
Academic year and summer internships are available. Applications are reviewed as they are submitted and first interviews are held on a rolling basis. As a general rule, apply as early as possible:

- For Spring Quarter: apply mid-January through mid-February
- For Summer Quarter: apply mid-January through mid-May
- For Fall Quarter: apply mid-April through mid-September
- For Winter Quarter: apply mid-October through mid-December
