Ellen Askey

 

 

Ellen Askey is a filmmaker who works across scripted film and documentary to explore the intricate relationships between people, environment, and science. From 2017 to 2020, she worked with the University’s STAGE Lab to develop and launch their NSF-funded documentary series, Curiosity: The Making of a Scientist, co-directing the pilot episode. While studying Cinema and Media at the University of Chicago, she created a thesis film, “Kinoptia” (2020), which takes a docu-fiction approach to fashion new ways of listening. In documentary development, Ellen interned with Jigsaw Productions and with the Post-Conflict Research Center in Sarajevo. In narrative short film, she has worked as director of photography of "The Ascent" (NYCA Student SemiFinalist, IndieX 2019), writer and director of "Sky Blue," and co-director of comedies including “Say It” (Asians On Film Festival 2019) and “Inconvenience” (Houston Comedy FF, Atlanta Comedy FF). She has recently worked as 2nd Assistant Director on the feature film, Ramsey: The Vandy Case. She completed her second short doc with the STAGE Lab, “Downstream” (2021), and is working as a freelance director and cinematographer based in Brooklyn.
