Quantum Games Opportunities

STAGE's Quantum Games Team Is Accepting Applications Now through January 7, 2022.

Join a team of postdocs, graduate students and undergraduates from aerospace engineering, biology, chemistry, computer science, neuroscience, physics, comparative literature, philosophy, psychology, theatre and visual arts to develop a series of analog, digital, and experiential games to discover whether cooperative and competitive game play can help provide the imagination with an understanding of the core principles of quantum physics.

Led by Professor Kawalek, Dr. Russell Ceballos (Chicago Quantum Exchange), Chemistry and Game Design student Ahit Kaan Tarhan, and Biology and Game Design student Denise Fischer, the quantum games research group is an interdisciplinary team inventing, prototyping and playtesting adaptations and original game ideas.

Positions Available and Required Skills:

-Game Engine Programmers (Unity (C-Sharp/Java)/ Unreal Engine/etc.) ideally with STEM background for multi-player, individual and/or experiential digital games
-Visual Artists with Coding Experience for 2D pixel art (sprites & tiles), assets, illustrative title screens
-Graphic Designers for analog game assets (cards, chips, rulebooks, signage)
-Engineers/Set Designers interested in building interactive installations

Winter Quarter 2022 will focus on developing, prototyping and playtesting to prepare for STAGE Lab's Quantum Games Installation at the American Physical Society Annual Meeting (March 13-17, 2022) then, in Spring Quarter 2022, the focus will be on creating a UChicago campus installation.

The goal is to create engaging, interactive and memorable games that afford a first-hand experience with the concepts of wave-particle duality, measurement, superposition, randomness, tunneling, interference, coherence, quantum fidelity, and entanglement. The games aim to illuminate these concepts and inspire the player to utilize them as tools and strategies to overcome the challenges that arise in game play.

With a desire to make cutting-edge research and science accessible to everyone, the design philosophy of the games align with that of STAGE: instead of an explicit intent to teach a curriculum, the games aim to invoke curiosity, spark moments of playfulness and catalyze play-centric learning modalities.

How to apply:

Submit your CV, including GPA, along with a cover letter/short statement describing:
-Your previous game design/development experience and interest (if any).
-Your interest/background in quantum physics (if any).
-Submit your application via: stagelab@uchicago.edu

UChicago undergraduates apply via Handshake.

UChicago graduate students apply via GRAD Gargoyle.

STAGE is accepting applications now through January 7, 2022.
